Isn't thinking about apple season on a cold winter day exciting!? Makes me hungry! :)

http://www.oylersorganicfarms.com/blog/13576

Mmmm baleage!

Mmm baleage! This calf is chomping down on a mouthful of our baleage. We do not feed our cattle any grain. When the grass is growing during the spring, summer, and early fall we cut some of it with our disc bine. We then let it dry some, but not completely, and then bale it into big round bales with our baler. A third person follows the baler, scoops up the fresh made bales and wraps them to keep the air out. The partially wet grass inside then ferments and makes baleage! The cattle LOVE it and it's good for them.

The cattle grew their winter coats and look like cute furry critters out in the pasture. They are all wooly and are quite warm despite the colder weather. When it snows, the snow doesn't even melt on them because they are so well insulated. Since they gradually became acclimated to the weather as it got colder, they do not need to be inside and enjoy being outside.

Happy January!
